Last week, former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg announced nine recipients of the Genesis Generation Challenge, a competition supporting innovative projects guided by Jewish values. Each team of young adults selected as a winner of the Genesis Generation Challenge is awarded $100,000 to help implement their sustainable and scalable solution to an important problem. The teams are also matched with a mentor to help develop the project.

UN Report Documents Hamas Exploiting UN Facilities

The first United Nations Board of Inquiry (BOI) report regarding Operation Protective Edge and last summer’s fighting in the Gaza Strip found that Hamas terrorists exploited UN facilities in the Gaza Strip and used children as human shields. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon admitted that at least three UN schools, which were supposedly not used as shelters at the time, were used for warfare: “The fact that they [UN schools] were used by militants to store their weaponry and, in two cases, probably to fire from is unacceptable,” wrote Ban in the executive summary.

Israeli Finds Way to Extend Shelf Life of Vegetables

The Hebrew University’s Yissum technology transfer company has found a new way to extend the shelf life of vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, celery, spinach and parsley. The discovery, which was presented at the 19th Agritech Israel exhibition held in Tel Aviv last week, is especially important in an industry where as much as 50 percent of leafy vegetables can be lost before reaching the market due to natural wilting and deterioration (senescence).

Conference of European Rabbis Meet With Pope at the Vatican
