Shabbat Pesach (Passover): When Death Lost its Sting

Because tonight is the first night of Passover, the regular Torah reading cycle is interrupted with a special reading. In Passover's Parasha, Moses instructs the Jewish People concerning the details of the first Passover offering. And Since Yeshua’s death, burial, and resurrection occurred in a Hebraic context during Passover, examining Jewish customs surrounding death, burial, mourning, and resurrection can further our understanding of His death and resurrection.

Parasha Shemini (Eighth): The Ordination of Aaron

For seven days, Aaron and his sons stayed at the Tent of Meeting as part of their ordination process. On the eighth day, Moses called for them to begin presenting the offerings (קָרְבֳּנוֹת, korbanot) to the Lord. These offerings were given as a kind of “welcoming ceremony” to greet the arrival of God’s Shekhinah (Glory or Divine Presence).

The Israelites are to create the Sanctuary’s water basin, anointing oil, and incense. God tells Moses that He has chosen a “wise-hearted” artisan named Bezalel, along with his associate Oholiab, to lead the sacred construction project. In order to fund the building of the Sanctuary, God commands Moses to take a census of the people of Israel and to instruct them to give a half shekel of silver.
