UN Begins War Crimes Investigation Against Israel

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has appointed an international commission to investigate Israel’s conduct during Operation Protective Edge. The UN statement said the independent team will probe "all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law ... in the context of the military operations conducted since June 13, 2014." The commission is to be headed by William Schabas, a Canadian professor of international law known for his bias against Israel’s leaders, especially Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and blindness toward Hamas.

Parasha Eikev (Because): The Heel of the Messiah

"Follow in His steps." (1 Peter 2:21)

The title of this week’s Parasha, Eikev, means because. It is used in this Parasha as a conjunction to create a relationship between experiencing God’s blessings and obedience to His Torah. Another meaning of the Hebrew word ekev is heel (as in the heel of a foot). Ancient Jewish sages interpreted this dual meaning of the word “ekev” to refer to the generation of the “heels of Mashiach (Messiah).” The last generation of the Exile is called ikvata d’meshichah or the heels of Messiah, since that generation was expected to hear the footsteps of the Messiah.

Israeli and Palestinian negotiators held a second round of indirect talks on Tuesday aimed at finding a lasting end to the five-week confrontation. Because the Hamas charter calls for the destruction of Israel, the teams do not deal directly with one another at the headquarters of the Egyptian General Intelligence. The proposals and counter-proposals are being shuttled between the two teams by mediators.

US Pastors Visit Israel During Operation Protective Edge

Christians United for Israel (CUFI), the pro-Israel organization with 1.8 million members (founded by Christian pastor John Hagee), came to Israel for a three-day trip last week, with 51 pastors—one from each state and the District of Columbia. "There are still people in America who can distinguish morally between Israel and Hamas. There are still people in America who appreciate what Israel is doing—not just to protect their own citizens, but we believe deeply that when Israel battles Hamas they're also protecting us in America," CUFI Executive Director David Brog said.

Israeli UN Ambassador Warns Nations Against Terrorism

Treasure Trove of Temple Era Coins Found

On Tisha B'Av, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced the discovery of a treasure trove of 144 bronze coins dating from the fourth year of the Jewish Revolt against Rome. The coins are decorated with the image of a chalice that may have been like those used in the Temple, as well as the Arba Minim (Four Species) that are relevant to Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles).

Parasha Va’etchanan (And I Pleaded): Moses Pleads with the Lord

This week’s Torah portion begins with Moses reminding the people of how he pleaded with God for the privilege of entering the Promised Land, but God refused to grant his request. Rabbinic tradition says that Moses begged God 515 times, (taken from the gematria or numerical value of the word va’etchanan). Moses asked God, “’Let me go over and see the good land beyond the Jordan—that fine hill country and Lebanon.’ But because of you the Lord was angry with me and would not listen to me. ‘That is enough,’ the Lord said. ‘Do not speak to me anymore about this matter.’” (Deuteronomy 3:25–26)
